Hollywood is a neighborhood of Los Angeles, not a city, and the part of it most people actually live in is the flats: the grid of streets between Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, south of the hills, roughly from La Brea east to the 101. North of Sunset the streets climb into the Hollywood Hills; south of Santa Monica they run on toward Hancock Park and Larchmont. The famous parts sit right at the edge of it. Hollywood and Vine and the Walk of Fame are a few blocks north on Hollywood Boulevard, with the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Pantages and the Capitol Records tower. The Sunset Strip picks up to the west at the West Hollywood line, and the Hollywood Bowl is tucked into the canyon just past the 101.

What keeps the neighborhood working, though, is production. Paramount Pictures on Melrose is the last major studio still inside Hollywood proper, and around it sit Sunset Gower, Sunset Bronson, Raleigh and a dense ring of post-production houses, sound stages, equipment rental and prop shops. That production economy is why so many of the duplexes and courtyard units here have been tenanted for decades by people who walk to work, and why the neighborhood has held a steady owner-user and investor market through every cycle.

Getting around is easier than the traffic reputation suggests. The 101 runs along the eastern edge with on-ramps at Sunset, Hollywood and Vine; the Metro B Line stops at Hollywood/Highland, Hollywood/Vine and Hollywood/Western on its way downtown and to North Hollywood; and Runyon Canyon and Griffith Park sit at the north edge, so a trail is a short drive or a long walk from most of the flats.
