Newport Beach is built around its harbor. The Balboa Peninsula runs the length of it — the boardwalk, the two piers, the Fun Zone and the ferry at the end — while Balboa Island and Lido Isle sit inside the bay with their own small grids and walk streets. Across the water are the bayfront neighborhoods of Bayshores, Dover Shores and Newport Heights, and to the southeast the land rises to Corona del Mar, Big Corona and the bluffs above Crystal Cove.

Inland, Newport Center and Fashion Island are the landmark core, with the office towers, the hospital and Back Bay trails nearby; the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve is a genuine wetland loop in the middle of the city.
