Hermosa Beach is the smallest of the three South Bay beach cities — about a square mile and a half between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. Pier Avenue is the spine: a pedestrian plaza running from Hermosa Avenue down to the pier, with restaurants, the Comedy & Magic Club and the Saturday farmers market on Valley Drive. The Strand and the beach bike path run the length of the city, and the volleyball courts by the pier host tournaments every summer.

Housing sits on a tight grid of small lots, with walk streets and stair streets west of Hermosa Avenue and hillside blocks east of it toward Valley and Ardmore. Most of it is rebuilt multi-level single-family homes and townhome-style duplexes; condominiums cluster near the pier. PCH and the 405 handle the commute, and LAX is a short run north.
