Manhattan Beach is two miles of sand with a small, walkable city behind it. The Strand runs the length of the beach to the pier and the Roundhouse aquarium; downtown sits at the top of the hill on Manhattan Avenue and Highland, and the Sand Section's walk streets — narrow pedestrian lanes with no cars — are the format the city is best known for. East of Sepulveda are the Tree Section, with its named-tree streets, and the Hill Section above downtown.

The housing is mostly rebuilt: original beach cottages have given way to three-story homes on small lots in the Sand Section, while the Tree Section keeps larger lots and more yard. Getting around is Sepulveda and the 405, with LAX a few minutes north — one of the shortest airport runs of any beach city.
