San Diego is a city of distinct neighborhoods rather than a single center. Downtown holds the Gaslamp Quarter, East Village and Little Italy, with the bay and the Embarcadero on one side; Balboa Park sits just north of it, and around the park are North Park, South Park, Hillcrest and Golden Hill. Farther out you reach Point Loma and Ocean Beach on the water, Mission Hills and Kensington inland, and Mission Valley in the middle of it all.

Because the neighborhoods were built in different decades, the housing changes block by block: Craftsman and Spanish bungalows around the park, high-rise and loft condominiums downtown, and postwar single-family streets and canyon lots almost everywhere else. The 5, 8, 15 and 163 tie it together, and the Trolley runs from downtown to Mission Valley, La Mesa and the border.
