Encinitas runs six miles along the north San Diego County coast and is really five communities in one city: Old Encinitas around the Highway 101 downtown, Leucadia to the north with its eucalyptus and surf shops, Cardiff-by-the-Sea to the south above the seaside campgrounds, and New Encinitas and Olivenhain inland. Moonlight Beach is the town's front yard, and the bluff-top Self-Realization Fellowship gold domes are the landmark you steer by.

The housing runs from beach cottages and small condominium complexes west of the 5 to postwar and 1980s single-family tracts in New Encinitas, and larger rural-feeling lots in Olivenhain. The 5 and Highway 101 run the length of the city, and the Coaster stops downtown for the run into San Diego.
