Oceanside is the northernmost coastal city in San Diego County, bordered by Camp Pendleton. The Oceanside Pier — the longest wooden pier on the West Coast — anchors a downtown that has filled in with restaurants and hotels while keeping the Sunset Market and the Thursday farmers market on Pier View Way. North of it is the harbor and its village; inland the city runs east along Mission Avenue past the Mission San Luis Rey toward Fire Mountain, Rancho del Oro and Ocean Hills.
Housing is unusually varied for a beach city: bungalows and small multi-family buildings in the downtown core, condominiums near the harbor and the strand, postwar single-family in Fire Mountain and Loma Alta, and newer tracts and 55-plus communities east of the 5. The 5, the 76 and the Coaster and Sprinter trains all meet here.
